While varicose veins might not be a  critical illness but it is a big annoyance that might lead to more severe health issues later in life, changes in lifestyle and daily habits are one of the things that increase one’s chance of getting varicose veins.
Varicose veins are when the veins especially those in legs might get enlarged or twisted and these may lead to severe pain at times.
Below are a list of everyday habits people have developed without realising that they may be the cause of varicose veins.

Standing for long hours: “This is a habit that might be more of a requirement of your job, standing in one spot for long hours may cause varicose veins and this can be helped if you try and walk around more often than staying put in one place, standing at the same spot for longer hours puts an undue stress on the veins leading to the blood getting collected in them and this causes the walls of the veins to weaken further damaging the valves”.

Sitting for long hours: “While standing at the same spot is not advisable, neither is sitting at your desk for long hours, this is a habit that develops out of necessity as most of our jobs involve sitting at the desk for long hours and while we are aware of the many unhealthy effects of sitting continuously for long hours, not many know that varicose veins is one of them, it is a good idea to take breaks from sitting at regular intervals and walk around a bit all through the day”.
Wearing high heels: “Here is an evil that most people are increasingly becoming aware of, but are reluctant to let go of, when you walk, the calf muscles act like a pump to help the blood flow in the veins and walking around in high heels freezes the calves in this position hence the blood isn’t pumped efficiently leading to stagnation and then enlarged veins”.

High salt intake: “Everybody enjoys a savoury snack from time to time, but a high salt intake on a regular basis leads to a high water retention, this increases the pressure on the veins and causes them to enlarge, eventually developing into varicose veins”.
Crossing your legs: “Crossing your legs creates a pressure on them and your hips, this causes the veins to engorge, become visible and eventually evolve into spider veins and while this isn’t exactly varicose veins but is effective in the vicinity”.

  1. A very successful way to treat tributary veins, spider veins or even superficial varicose veins, however often patients with the above also have saphenous vein reflux. If a patient has unsuccessful or recurrence after sclerotherapy an ultrasound should be performed by a vascular and vein specialists to determine if there is indeed a deeper problem.
